本屆歷來罕見地提名了七部最佳劇情片影片，不知是今年好片太多，還是沒有特別突出的作品，甫獲影評人的選擇獎最多項入圍的「阿拉斯加之死」竟未獲外籍記者協會的青睞，僅僅入圍了配樂及歌曲，可能嚴重影響入圍奧斯卡的機會。

「贖罪」是本屆入圍最大贏家，但別忘了「冷山」曾經也是，卻在奧斯卡影片、導演、劇本等重要入圍獎項落榜，但「贖罪」得到的好評還是使它比「冷山」的入圍機率高出許多。「蓋世奇才」也獲得五項提名，但麥可尼柯斯並未入圍導演，且整部片走勢很像三年前尼柯斯的「偷情」，可能只有菲利普西摩霍夫曼比較有奧斯卡相。

賀喜剛成為本屆金馬獎最大贏家的「色｜戒」雖與奧斯卡無緣，李安還是外籍記者協會心目中的最愛之一。
