A Lecture Given By Dr.Werner J.Wagner

The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr.Hyde (1886) by Robert Louis Stevenson represents the genre of the Gothic novel of the Victorian era, which is based on the Romantic ideas of human nature. The story is a masterpiece of Victorian literature and on of the most influential modern myths: the split mature of the human begin: the civilized Dr. Jeckyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde, which shows the “true” nature of man as barbarian and evil. The Hollywood film industry has taken over this myth and produced many bad films about the myth but on of them is an outstanding piece of the art of film: the version of 1932, directed by Rouben Mamoulian.

由史帝文生(Robert Louis Stevenson)所著之”The Strange Case of Dr.Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde”是維多莉亞時期以浪漫派手法表達人性的哥德式小說。此著作為該時代對人性描寫的文學代表作，而其對現代文學更是影響深遠。藉由故事主角Dr.Jeckyll和變身後的他－Mr. Hyde來剖析人性的善惡，並真實地表達了人類野蠻和邪惡的部份。雖然好萊塢曾多次改編拍攝此作，但其中改編最成功的莫過於1932年，由魯本馬莫林(Rouben Mamoulian)執導之版本。
