My first Big Contribution

Needs and motivation theories for Jeremy

When applying the theory of McClelland’s social motives, we can clearly know that Jeremy is the “high need for affiliation” type person. He needs the interpersonal relationships and opportunities to communicate with other people. He believes that having happier employees and improving community relations can attain the profits.

However, just like what we mentioned above, both of Brian and Jeremy have to move away from their extreme styles, especially if they will have to work together to bring the business forward. What Jeremy needs is to learn how to think in the “business way”. The company they run is not a charity organization. Being a kind and friendly man is good; however, if he is taken advantage of by customers, it will have negative impact on the company’s profits and long term credibility.

Nevertheless, because Jeremy comes from psychology background, it is not so easy to ask him to have the business perspective. The most critical issue is how to motivate him.

First, because Jeremy likes to communicate with people, if he can learn how to stand in the business side, he can act as a “bridge” between Brian and employees. People in the company like to tell him their inside desires due to his personality. On the other hand, he can understand what Brian thinks now because Brian is more task and result oriented. Only when Jeremy understands Brian’s “buzzwords” can they reach consensus. Then, Jeremy can help to pass and translate the needs for both sides. Jeremy can still do the things he is good at and which he desires to do, thereby reducing possible conflicts between employees and Brian and improving the working atmosphere. Finally, Jeremy and Brian can achieve their common objective: to maximize the profits for the company.

Secondly, Jack can apply the Goal Setting theory. Goals motivate Jeremy to use knowledge. The goal here is to have a business vision and perspective and learn how to cooperate with his brother, Brian. Furthermore, Jeremy is interested in fulfilling his social responsibilities. Only when the company makes more profits can the company have more resources to allocate to society (for example, to donate more money to local charities). This will be a strong incentive for Jeremy to become more of a “business man”.
