紫外光以往被認為會防礙長鏈有機分子的形成，然而一項新研究發現紫外光反而可能實際上是為生命起源的關鍵。
從年輕的太陽射到地球上的強烈紫外線被認為會破壞所有照射到的有機分子。然而一項數學模式卻顯示紫外光其實挑選出了生命的分子種子。
地球早期的生命被廣泛認為是基於RNA的。RNA的特定成分能吸收紫外光而作為「保護者」，因此有比其他分子更高的存活優勢。德國Osnabruck Univ.的生物物理學家Armen Mulkidjanian等人建立了一個理論模式來說明長鏈RNA是怎麼產生的。簡單的RNA分子在特定環境下的演化是被研究得相當多的，但是問題仍在於第一個夠長的RNA是怎麼來的。
Univ. Colorado at Boulder的「RNA世界」專家Michael Yarus認為他們的工作正中要點，因為如果這個問題能被解決，則RNA世界就會被認為是個事實，而非單純猜測。
地球上的生命是卅七億年前演化出來的，當時並沒有臭氧層的保護來擋掉紫外光，因為當時紫外光的強度是現在的上百倍。RNA的核甘酸是由三種成分構成－－醣、磷酸和含氮鹼基，Mulkidjanian認為這些鹼基可是非常有效地消除掉紫外光，而保護了形成骨架的醣和磷酸。
他們把不同有機分子的光化學資料輸入到一個電腦模式中，以模擬紫外光對穩定性的效應。結果發現RNA在強紫外光的情況上，仍能比其他分子更可能形成長鏈。而且紫外光還可能促進了聚合化，在小的機率上被紫外光擊到的RNA可能被激化成能和其他分子作用而成為鏈狀。這使得對紫外光阻礙生命演化的觀點轉變為視紫外光為推動整個過程的選擇因素。
