通常購買3C產品、電器、或單價較高的包包、飾品等店家都會附上「保證書、保固證明📃」,英文有2個單字可以表達「guarantee」、「warranty」,雖然字義相近,但還是有下列細微的差異喔:

 

👉 guarantee 針對商品包修、包退等的保固、保證,多由商家提供,形式不拘涵蓋範圍較廣。

The farmer gives stores her guarantee that all of her dairy products are fresh and ready for sale. 

這位農夫向店家保證她的乳製品絕對新鮮且隨時可以上架銷售。

 

👉 warranty 多指商品的保證書、保固證明,提供者多為製造商,形式以書面為主,保障範圍較侷限,且增加保固內容與期限時需額外收費。

The company fixed Nigel's TV for free as it was under warranty.

由於還在保固期限內,這間公司幫奈傑免費維修電視。

assumption

ssumption和hypothesis在中文都常譯為「假設」(或「假說」),也有人在論文寫作時把這兩個字當成同義詞交替使用,但其實兩者的意義還是稍有差別,在翻譯上不宜混淆。在學術情境裡,assumption是論述者已經視為真實的陳述或者信念 (belief),並作為基礎或先決條件來開展後續的論述,不過這個assumption並不一定是公認或經過驗證為真的。而hypothesis雖然也是一個未經驗證的陳述或想法,但研究的目的就是要驗證其真偽,最常用的研究方法是實驗,而研究結果可能是接受或者拒斥該hypothesis。因此筆者傾向將assumption譯為「預設」(預先設定的論述基礎或前提條件),而hypothesis譯為「假設」或「假說」(尚未驗證為真之前先假定為真),以資區別,並有助理解原字義蘊。兩字之例句如下:
