Tractor Competition Acts

Growing up in small-town Wallis, TX, where in fact the tractors and farmlands flourish play an integral role in every day life, it appears only right that restoring old tractors would develop into a passion for local Future Farmers of America (FFA) teens.

Inspi-red by that love, two Wallis teenagers entered the 2005 Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition, rendering it completely towards the event's finals in the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The Tractor Restoration Competition rewards the determination, business savvy and mechanical skill of high school-aged FFA members from across the country. Students must send a book that details the entire restoration process. The skills learned through your competition help develop the participants into future leaders in the agricultural community.

The teenagers, members of the Brazos, TX, FFA, discuss an aptitude for physical repair and an interest in trucks, in addition to one other thing: Tyler and Jordan Raska are brother and sister.

The Raskas as an alternative took an alternate method of their restoration projects, while the scenario might have converted into a sibling rivalry. As opposed to battling to overcome another, Tyler and Jordan labored on their trucks together, offering support and encouragement along the way. Through the long hours spent revamping their buses and watchfully recording the complete process, the brother-and-sister group bonded amid the oil, paint and rusty tractor parts. A senior at Brazos High, Tyler is no stranger to tractor competitions. He has been restoring trucks for four years, and had a really productive year in 2005, winning the eight shows he joined along with his Grandpa's 1959 John Deere 6-30, including a national opposition and three state tournaments.

The experience was an immensely positive one for Jordan, the only girl from the Brazos FFA to enter the competition, while falling somewhat short in her quest for the subject. Fed up with being the 'go-fer girl' for Tyler as h-e labored on his tractors, Jordan decided to beat her very own recovery, a John Deere 420.

Jordan, in her first year showing buses, originally drew inspiration from an unlikely place-the music video for 'Save yourself a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,' by nation group Big and Rich. The music video showcases Gretchen Wilson driving a 'sweet' tractor and Jordan decided she wanted to recover one that way.

Working alongside with her brother and her father, Jordan's knowledge of vehicles increased tremendously within the span of the task. She did just as much of the task by herself that she could and then employed the men for explanations and hands-on demonstrations when necessary.

'I suggest the Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition to others,' Jordan said. 'It is definitely an extraordinary learning experience that helped me develop skills for-life.
