If you are like me you'll love old stereo equipment, particularly valve amplifiers. Some may possibly say landmark manufacturers including Leak, Quad, Thorens, Garrard, Shure, SME, etc, who made an impact on the progress of Hi Fi (does anybody call it why these days?). I am very happy still your can purchase the Leak 30 Plus Amplifier. I also still have the original appearance and brochure which included it! The kind of instruction within it is like returning years!
Father (as parents do!) gave his cast-offs to me when he updated, so I continued to work with his Leak stuff for a period of time like the great Leak Sandwich 600 Speakers boy did they sound good? Sadly I dont have the speakers anymore.
Over the years a few of my friends bought Quad device amplifiers which at that time were way out of my range! But it did plant the seeds of interest, and around 10 years ago I was fortunate enough to obtain an un-molested pair of Quad 11 valve amplifiers & Quad 22 get a grip on unit. A number of people in the 80s thought it good to Modify them somewhat of advice if you want a pair of Quads, don't buy anything but unmodified material. Others have been destroyed. A year ago I bought a pair of Quad ESL-57 electrostatic speakers from E-bay hidden and untested. I'm very happy to say like many individuals on EBay the vendor was a genuine individual and I now possess an excellent set. They're maybe not yet functional even as we are in the act of some serious restoration work inside our home and when completed I'll have a Listening place specifically for my Hi Fi. Ill keep you updated with progress!
So now my system consists of:
Thorens TD125 Mk11; SME 3009 Series 11 tonearm; Shure M75ED; Quad 11 mono blocks; Quad 22 get a handle on unit; Quad ESL-57 speakers.
Currently I am using Tannoy Mercury Speakers theyre good through-the Quad 11 valve amplifiers head, I do have them on a couple of good quality stands makes a world of difference.
The Quads are likely to the Quad service department for a well-earned restoration so Ill keep you updated using the restoration..
