This time was different. Past years I'd settled in to a tent close to the car in the view below Richmond Peak, a timbered ridge to-the north and east of Seeley Lake, Montana. Time and again I'd experienced the view of the great wall of mountain ridge that rose up from the canyon below me, towering over all environments - the regal Montana top of Sunday Mountain. My co-worker found out about victoria secret crochless by browsing books in the library. From the Richmond Peak vantage point the experience of the peak, made up of blank slide zones, having a few ridges of trees and brush, seemed to rise nearly straight up from the valley floor below. It was not a mountain wall that I would expect to deliver a path, a bit of a cliffhanger route that would bring about the summit.
Awakening that Saturday morning in August though, again in the Richmond Peak view, after a quick breakfast, I threw my pack on my back. I then struck the trail up the side of Richmond Peak over the canyon from Sunday Mountain. I'd found an unmarked path that left the mapped trail/abandoned logging road leading up the side of Richmond Peak on a previous hike in the area. The unmarked path crossed the saddle where in fact the canyon rose to meet the ridge, and did actually relate to the Sunday Mountain experience, and then head upwards - at a sharp incline. I wasnt certain where the trail would lead, but it sure gave the appearance of providing a possible access route to the very best of Sunday Mountain.
With clear blue skies of an incredible Montana August day, the climb ahead would still be an awesome one as the sunlight of the day was to the east behind the Sunday Mountain form. No question about it, this is also bear country - Grizzly bear country. The initial distance with this path led down through heavy, overgrown wash as it led across the saddle. What better place for them to be chilling out than in the dense brush I was working my way through.
Such a huge relief to make it at night dense brush, without bear stories to publish home about. Out into the open I was on-the lower flanks of the hill I had dreamed of fixing for a long time. As noted, the walk straight away took a sharp change, upward in a steep climb. Then, veering off to-the north across the face, a slightly leveler trek ensued since it angled upward across the face through wonderful fields of bear-grass blended with a range of plants in a rainbow of colors. It had been almost beyond belief - trekking through chest high fields of flowers o-n the trail to Sunday Mountain.
The path light emitting diode across 2 or 3 influx draws filled with bear-grass, then doubled back, demanding battling up rock ledges, and again leading off across the draws. With another hour of battling the steep route, to my surprise I discovered myself working through a high mountain meadow place apparently house to a band of mountain sheep. My pulse faster as I understood this high meadow was buried in directly below among the summit cliffs outcroppings. Given the rise to that particular point, like my heart can beat even more quickly.
Another 20 minutes of scrambling, and finally, the summit ridge for Sunday Mountain was overcome. The watch stretched before me back and down into Montanas Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. To access the Sunday Mountain summit required yet another half-hour of struggling, following the ridge up and up until I can go no further, the highest point on the mountain ridge.
What an expression of success! In most directions the floor dropped below me, to the east off to the vastness of the Bob Marshall Wilderness with a large field of Grizzly Basin directly below. To the west from this birds eye view, the steep fall off I'd just appear opened on an extensive view of the Swan Valley with the Mission Mountain Range lining the western horizon. Below me, drifting lazily to the breezes, an eagle circled trying to find its morning snack. To the east from my perch at the top of my world, 2 or 3 snowbanks in the draws below me constantly held out for upcoming fall and cold temperatures reinforcements. A truly spectacular find on the Swan Range. From that wonderful vantage point other primary access jumping-off paths for your Bob Marshall Wilderness were visible up and down the Swan Range. Towards the north Holland Lake marked the path system from there, and south Pyramid Peak marked the access routes over Pyramid Pass.
