Let's go through the issues within this invitation from a marketing perspective.
* The majority of the invitations I received were from people whose names I didn't understand. Why would I want to be a part of their system? The request doesn't say how I would reap the benefits of their system and who they are, who they have use of.
* What's Linked-in, how does it work and what are the benefits of using it? No-one has yet explained this clearly within their invitation. You cannot expect that some one receiving this request knows what you are asking them to join or how it would be advantageous to them. It would be useful to have a passage or two describing how it works and citing a particular result anyone behind the invitation loved from membership. It might be that people assume that since 'basic account is free,' the normal person with this invitation will go-ahead and join. But even though it will not cost money, time would be taken by joining. You still need to 'sell' people o-n having a free activity, particularly with respect to an activity or organization that could be different for them.
* Nobody took some time to head off possible misconceptions or objections to this account. As I am concerned that joining would open me up to a lot of email and telephone calls by which I'd have no interest and that would waste my time, a non-member of Linked In. Again, you can't suppose that anything free is therefore enticing; you should imagine why some one may have questions or dismiss the theory and handle those objections.
* Using a processed invitation that is almost the exact same as everybody else's does not make a great effect. Even if the writing supplied by Linked-in were successful, which it's not, you'd wish to give it your own personal stamp.
Apart from being irritated that they're obviously encouraging visitors to send invitations that make little sense, I've nothing against Linked In. Perhaps it is a helpful organization. My point is that its members have to use common sense and basic marketing axioms to promote busy, cynical individuals to give it an opportunity..
