With therefore much curiosity about how social networks work, one begins to wonder when there is marketing potential within these social networks?

There has been a virtual explosion of social-networking sites in the past few years. Even the people like Google, Yahoo and MSN are becoming into it.

With therefore much curiosity about how social networks work, one begins to wonder if there is marketing potential within these social networks?

I have been seeing social network for quite a while now. In reality I'm an associate of numerous social network sites including http://www.myspace.com/ and https://www.linkedin.com simply to name two.

I joined partly because I wanted to see what they were, but more importantly to see on SEM what impact social media might have in the coming years.

I've been a member of numerous services for some time and the reach these sites have is amazing.

Like, from my LinkedIn network of eight people I've an extended network of over 12,600 people.

Imagine that - I'm only a click or two away from close to 13,000 others who share my related interests ranging from what I like to watch o-n TV to work I can provide to them.

Through my connections and their connections, I'm related to people ranging from the American Cancer Society, to Sun Microsystems to the University of Texas to Google.

But what marketing opportunities are there for Social Network?

Well, let's examine MySpace.

MySpace is among the prime sites on the net today. In case people want to dig up additional info about small blue arrow, there are many on-line databases people might consider investigating. It racked up 9.4 billion page-views in August 2005 (over Google) and new people are signing up in a rate of 3.5 million monthly.

MySpace is typical of where todays 18-30 year-old goes to manage their digital life. It allows people to post photos of themselves and their friends, develop a weblog, record their favorite artists, watch and share videos, suggest activities to do and lists a set of people they consider friends. It's with this 'Friends List' where a lot of the possibilities lay.

All thirty million-plus consumers of MySpace have a friends page that lists people that person views their friend. This really is a listing of people who they're interested in hearing from on a normal basis, as well as speaking with and about. After you add somebody as your friend they can send you emails, discuss your photos, study your websites, as well as leave messages that you can then share with others. This is a chance for quick feedback about you.

The capability to add friends to your site is crucial for marketing to MySpace consumers. In accordance with Courtney Holt, mind of new media and strategic advertising at Interscope Records, 'This generation is growing up without having ever watched programmed media. 'They do not think in terms of the record, and they don't think in terms of a TV schedule. They think in terms of TiVo, P2P, AOL, and of-course MySpace.

You can see how this could develop.

Let us say you produce a MySpace account to talk about your products or services. You blog about this and seek out the others that'll share your interests.

You then invite them to be your friend. Once they turn into a friend you start your 'soft offer' begging your product for them.

They start blogging and sharing it, as they grow to appreciate it. Soon thousands or even thousand of people are referring to you and your product or service.

Do not think this can work?

Allow me to give a few examples to you. There are lots of companies who've gotten their start MySpace. Simply by hosting a number of their music o-nline and blogging about them-selves they created a following. Soon they'd file deals and contracts arranged.

Obviously to utilize ser-vices like MySpace you-need to have some thing this marketplace needs. If you don't then you probably should not put too much effort into MySpace.

But that does not mean other social networking opportunities should be ignored. When I stated earlier, Linked-in is more of an expert introduction service. If your products or services meets here then by all means explore it more.

And you'll find the others also. Ser-vices including Yahoo!s MyWeb, Flickr, http://del.icio.us and more.

If you have ever wondered what other online possibilities may be available, consider social-networking.
