〈題目〉To eat one's words

G: 聊王，最近你聊到 instant food 和 instant beverage，但你卻說不 eat 那種速食的東西，那麼到底 What are you liking to eat?
D: 不要說 “Are you liking”，要說 “do you like”。我這個人很 constant，只要 like就會過去、現在、未來都 like，所以不會 liking, 不會「正在喜歡」，好像「不久就會不 like」的樣子。
H: All right. 那麼 What do you like to eat?
D: Well，我喜歡 whatever comes to me . 不過，我不愛 eat my words.
I : We believe you. 你的人格是 trustworthy，值得信賴，怎麼會「食言」呢?
G : 你就是因為連 your own words 都不想 eat, 所以到現在也不 fat， 看來 stature 還滿好的。
D : 謝謝你的 compliment. 我知道 You are being polite. 但 despite 你們的恭維，我還是要 complement 剛才那句話，使它更完整，或 supplement 那句話，使它更有料。
G: 你不 eat， 但卻一再 complement 或 supplement，正是所謂的少 quantity 多 meals，是吧? Figure 好果然有其 sake.
D: For goodness' sake! 別扯 too far 好嗎? 我所說的 “eat my words”並不是 「食言」的 meaning。英文裡，「食言而肥」或「背信」應該譯成 “go back on (或upon) one's word”, 不是 “eat one's words”。
H: 不然， “eat one's words”會 denote 什麼意思?
D: 它 denotes「收回前言」，也就是「撤銷以前所說的 words，等於 admit 說錯話」的意思。
I: Really? 我 doubt it.
D: 不信，去 consult 字典好了。
G: 哈!哈! 你每次都叫我們去查 dictionary. 我早已經 look it up了! 聊王，這下你可 ball了!
D: Ball了？ 什麼 sense? Am I balled up? Am I confused or muddled? 我會迷糊嗎?會混亂嗎?
G: 我說你「糗」了! 這本 dictionary 明明說 “eat one's words” 就是「食言、背信」。你還說你沒 get balled up，沒混亂迷糊?
D : Friends，你們 consult 的英漢字典都那麼說，是嗎? 可見天下 errors 一大抄，有錯不改還把人笑，wrongly 指控對的在胡鬧。
G: 你還是死不認 error 嗎? 你認為字典會有 error 嗎?
D: 不會的話哪來 erratum 勘誤表？ In reality, 凡是人都會有 error， 所以說 “To err is human.” 字典是人 compile 跟 edit 起來的。人在編撰編輯的 course 中，總難免有 lapses，有克服不了的小缺失。那些英漢字典就是讓小 lapses 變成大 errors 的examples.
H: 你說得這麼有 confidence，難道你有 evidence 嗎?
D: 證據就在英英字典裡。去 look it up 吧，看看英英字典如何 define it?
I: 等一下。 Wait a minute. Let me see. To eat … to eat … to eat one's words … to … Oh, yes, here it is. This英英字典說： “to eat one's words” 就是 “to retract something said earlier”。
D: That's it. 所謂 “retract”就是 “withdraw 或 draw back”的意思。 一個人 said something earlier，事後發現不對，只好 unsay it，把話收回，當成沒說。這種retract 話語的行為就像把話吞回肚裡去一樣。 所以 “eat one's words”絕對不等於 “go back on one's word”。必要時，我會有勇氣 eat my words，但通常我不會 go back on my word。
G: 照你這麼說來，我們剛才都 misunderstood you， 也說了不少 wrong words . 請allow us to eat our words 吧!
D: 你們既然 admit 犯了 lapses 或 errors 了，我當然會 allow 你們 eat something，必要時 including pizza 之類的 instant food，好讓你們變得很 obese, very fat, 不只是plump 豐滿而已。
H: It's very kind of you to say so. 但拜託，拜託，不要 encourage 我們吃好嗎? 我們已經夠 stout，夠 portly 了，健壯肥美還不夠嗎? 還需要變 obese「大胖」嗎?
G : 我們只想 increase our knowledge 而已。 剛才我 suddenly discovered that 表示「收回話語」 and「食言而肥」的那兩個 English idioms , 其中一個用複數的 “words”，另一個則是單數的 “word”。為何要有這種 distinction 呢？
D : A good question. 那是 because—
H : 還是因為 language 是一種 habit, 一種 convention., 一種 well—
D : 不必 well 下去啦。On one hand, 那的確也是一種 linguistic habit。不過，on the other hand, 那也是有 logic, 也作了合理的 distinction。
I : 怎樣 explicate? I am all ears.
D : Don't you see? 把話吞進去是一個 word 一個 word 地 eat, 直到整句話的每個 word 都被 eaten up，所以是 eat 某人的 words。可是，背信並不是真的在吞進一個個的 word, 而是說一套做一套，不把話語的訊息 message 當一回事，而話語的字雖多，訊息卻只一個，不是嗎？所以背信的「食言」是針對整体的 message, 不是針對言語中的字句，所以要用抽象的 abstract 的 word, 而不用具体的 concrete 的 words. 我這麼 explicate, 你們聽懂嗎？
G : 好像 understand, 但 lacking examples, 還是有點 at a loss 的感覺。
D : 好吧， “I am a man of my word,”我說話算話，我會 keep my word, 不會 break my word, 所以我可發誓 upon my word。有時候，我派人 send word 給他，他卻來 leave word 給我。這些詞語的 word 都是 message, 所以抽象，不用 singular 的 “a word”或 plural 的 “words”。
H : 那麼具体的 a word 或 words 有什麼 examples 呢？
D : 有些人喜歡用 big words 去 talk big, 有些人 like fair words, 有些人不想囉唆就 in a word, 講不清楚就 in other words。有的女人是 a lady of many words，有的則是 a woman of few words。有的人講話躲躲閃閃，老是在 mince words，有的更小心，說話以前還要 weigh his words，但說完話又覺得只是 waste his words。我已經說了這麼多 words，你們還要我 put in any word 嗎？
G : 夠了！已經 more than enough 了！
