Fair fair Alice

Alice.

What wert thou, dream-Alice, in thy foster-father’s eyes? How
shall he picture thee? Loving, first, loving and gentle: loving as
a dog (forgive the prosaic simile, but I know no earthly love so
pure and perfect), and gentle as a fawn: then courteous—courteous
to all, high or low, grand or grotesque, King or Caterpillar, even
as though she were herself a King’s daughter, and her clothing of
wrought gold: then trustful, ready to accept the wildest
impossibilities with all that utter trust that only dreamers know;
and lastly, curious—wildly curious, and with the eager enjoyment of
Life that comes only in the happy hours of childhood, when all is
new and fair, and when Sin and Sorrow are but names—empty words
signifying nothing!

Alice

(Prima, Secunda, Tertia

ALL in the golden afternoon
Full leisurely we glide;
For both our oars, with little skill,
By little arms are plied,
While little hands make vain pretence
Our wanderings to guide.

Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour
Beneath such dreamy weather,
To beg a tale of breath too weak
To stir the tiniest feather!
Yet what can one poor voice avail
Against three tongues together?

Imperious Prima flashes forth
Her edict to begin it
In gentler tone Secunda hopes
”There will be nonsense in it!”
While Tertia interrupts the tale
Not more than once a minute.

Anon, to sudden silence won,
In fancy they pursue
The dream-child moving through a land
Of wonders wild and new,
In friendly chat with bird or beast --
And half believe it true.

And ever, as the story drained
The wells of fancy dry,
And faintly strove that weary one
To put the subject by,
`The rest next time’ -- `It is next time!’
The happy voices cry.

Thus grew the tale of Wonderland:
Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out
And now the tale is done,
And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.

Alice! a childish story take,
And with a gentle hand
Lay it where Childhood’s dreams are twined
In Memory’s mystic band,
Like pilgrim’s wither’d wreath of flowers
Pluck’d in a far-off land.

這首詩就變成 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 的前言,和另一首淡淡哀傷的前言(Through the Looking Glass)成為對比。

To tea
I do think it is a very good habit. It is one way to OWN something, as eating. I love these sentences by Carroll. They make me think of something I once possessed when I was little and that is a kind of sweet memory. I always enjoyed the time when I could crawl into the dining table and waited for my mom to call me out for snacks. I was so wild, curious, and polite (my mom said) at the same time.

I can`t write better than Carroll, so I kept his description in my heart. That makes me strong.
