(the most inconspicuous 6-foot-3 pitcher )Jorge Posada 再次為王建民背書:只要王建民出手角度保持住,今年成績會很可怕。(If he can do that consistently, he’s going to have a hell of a year)以下轉載SAM BORDEN的文章:

Wang is silent, deadly
BY SAM BORDEN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

TAMPA - A group of players gathered around Mariano Rivera’s locker yesterday, sitting in a circle and chatting. Chien-Ming Wang was at the adjacent locker, occasionally poking his head into the conversation and laughing along with the others, but mostly just watching. His eyes, which look even younger than his 25 years, kept moving slowly around the room.
This was pretty standard for Wang, who may be the most inconspicuous 6-foot-3 pitcher ever. Jason Giambi recalled a road trip early last season, when several veterans - including Giambi and Rivera - had dinner with the Taiwanese righthander just after he was called up from the minors.

"He’s never going to talk your ear off," Giambi said. "But you could tell he understands a lot. He just listens."

Wang’s personality is the same when it comes to his pitching. After getting knocked around in his first spring outing, pitching coach Ron Guidry told Wang he had been changing the arm angle in his delivery and was throwing his sinker from too low; he needed to get more on top of the ball and "throw downhill" to get the movement and velocity he was seeking.

Wang took the advice, worked on the mechanical adjustment between starts and was simply dominant yesterday, striking out four in three scoreless innings of the Yanks’ 7-3 victory over Atlanta at Legends Field.

Catcher Jorge Posada only had to remind Wang to keep his arm up one time and was otherwise impressed with what he saw.

"If he can do that consistently, he’s going to have a hell of a year," Posada said.

Wang was equally pleased, though you surely wouldn’t know it from talking to him. While he’s perfectly pleasant and accommodating to reporters, his interviews are typically brief. Quite simply, he doesn’t have much to say.

"You don’t even know he’s around and when he’s around you don’t know he’s around," Joe Torre said, perhaps having spent too much time in the dugout with Yogi Berra.

Andy Phillips, who played with Wang at Triple-A Columbus as well as in the Bronx, said he’s spent enough time with Wang and knows he has a personality but still rarely sees it.

"If I can get a ’Hey Philly’ out of him on most days it’s a good day," Phillips said. "But it’s not like he’s unfriendly. That’s just the way he is. We all got to know that and know that’s his style."

Part of that quietness certainly relates to the fact that he doesn’t speak much English (Wang does not have an interpreter), but even if he did, several Yankees said they weren’t sure there’d be much difference in how much you’d hear from Wang.

"I think that’s personality more than anything," Torre said. "(Hideki) Matsui is so different and he’s got the language barrier, too."

Posada said he believes that Wang understands when the two have on-the-mound conferences during games, but admitted that he probably wouldn’t know even if there was some confusion.

"I’ll still tell him something," Posada said. "He just says ’Yes’ and keeps on going."

Despite his age, the Yankees believe Wang has the poise to succeed in the Bronx and much of that sentiment stems from - of course - his quiet demeanor. To most observers, it is an indication of an inner calm and confidence.

"You don’t know what he’s thinking, ever," Posada said. "But he looks like the same guy always and that is important."

SPELLING RELIEF: The Yankees spent much of their winter working on overhauling the bullpen and yesterday may have been the best example yet of how effective the relief corps could be.

Rivera is, of course, the most important component and the Yanks’ closer needed just eight pitches to get through his third outing of the spring. He was followed by Kyle Farnsworth (one hit, one strikeout) and Ron Villone (perfect inning), who will be among the pitchers setting the table for him during the season; the trio combined to handle the last three innings against the Braves.
