大聯盟主辦的棒球經典賽WBC，其中有個很重要的宗旨，那就是：球員有權決定要不要參賽，也因為如此，中華棒協一度寄望予大聯盟駐日本官員Jim Small，但是事實卻是，很多已在大聯盟站穩腳步的球員，根本不需要在WBC來向世人或世界棒球迷證明甚麼，另外一種觀察角度是，介於大聯盟與小聯盟(王建民、徐在應)，或是剛剛轉隊的自由球員(賈西亞帕拉)，為了站穩大聯盟或爭取下一張更肥合約的球員，在個人前途和球隊求勝壓力下，多半打了退堂鼓了！

用以上的角度來思考王建民能不能打經典賽，答案似乎再清楚不過了，王建民目前仍無法與A-ROD或Jeter等指標性球員相提並論，洋基球團會迫於輿論壓力放行，但是王建民呢？一來去年有傷病史，二來今年要為站穩洋基先發投手陣容來打拚，洋基一定不會正式跟中華隊說：No，要不要打這個問題的球，會丟回給王建民自己！

Chien-Ming Wang could be the next Yankee to take a pass on the World Baseball Classic.

The right-hander, who was out of action from July 13-Sept. 6 because of shoulder inflammation, might bow out of the tournament and remain under the Yankees’ supervision this spring.

Team officials are not sure what Wang’s ultimate decision will be, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he had not spoken with the pitcher’s representatives lately.

Yankees pitchers and catchers report to Tampa on Feb. 15, and Wang currently is on the preliminary roster for the Taiwanese team. A call to a Wang representative went unreturned.

Robinson Cano pulled out of the tournament on Tuesday, saying he’d be riding the bench on a Dominican club loaded at second base with Alfonso Soriano and Luis Castillo.

As is his custom now, Mariano Rivera is on a slower pace in spring training and has declined to pitch for Panama -- though he was still on that nation’s roster, posted on mlb.com, as of Saturday. Cano was still listed on the Dominican roster as well.

Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and Al Leiter are scheduled to play on the U.S. team, with Yankee teammates Bernie Williams (Puerto Rico), Ron Villone (Italy), Miguel Cairo (Venezuela) and Ramiro Mendoza (Panama) also slated to participate.

CHACON ON HOLD: Cashman reported that nothing was imminent on signing Shawn Chacon, the last arbitration-eligible Yankee.

The right-hander has asked for $4.15 million, while the Yanks have countered with $3.1 million. An arbitration hearing is scheduled for Feb. 13.

"If we don’t get a deal, we go to arbitration. That’s how the process works," Cashman said.
