I. Introduction

In the tradition culture “Black” is the color always used to symbol unlucky.

We can find “Black” in the funeral and many ways to symbol unfortunate, such as “Black Friday” and “Black Cat” etc.

But is “Black” just has the means of unfortunate? To dig into this subject we will search the information and the related article to prove that “Black” isn’t just has the means of unfortunate.

In our paper will search many approvals and the opposed example to use this examples we will deep search the means of Black.

We also think Black is not only has the means of unfortunate but has other means behind it,

To support our viewpoint we will search the master’s point of view on Black and demonstrate our think is right.

And if the “Black” is a symbol of unlucky why some country use black in their national flag? We will dig into this marvelous question and let it support our viewpoint that the black has another means behind it.

In the end of this project we will find that the funeral use black is not just signify unfortunate but signify black is a solemn color.

II. Thesis

A. Black in legend

Black is a color regarded as an unfortunate color. According to WikiAnswers, an online dictionary, the color black has many specific implications “mourning sooty, threatening, sinister, and deadly.” However it is connected to unknown and invisible. People are usually afraid of things that can’t be sure, so black makes them uneasy. In many cultures, black is often associated with devilishness, death, unhappiness. On the other hand, black is used in fashion. And it represented dignity, formality. Black used in language is always describing something bad, such as black list, black cat and black Friday. The following are the examples of negative black.

1. Black Friday

There are many different sources of the name “Black Friday”.

The popular thought is that the day is after the Thanksgiving Day, the fist day start working. In this time, people usually begin to shop for Christmas; many shops will have large quantity income. In tradition, people used different color ink to record the account, red stands for loss; black stands for profit. To represent the expectation of having profit, so they call the day as “Black Friday”. And the shops’ employees use the word “Black Friday” to self-ridiculing, expressed they will be busy in this day.

Another origin is according to western religious belief and superstition: Jesus Christ was died on Friday, and thirteen is an unlucky number. The union of the two reasons makes one believe that on the day will have unfortunate things happened. In the history had several events happened on Black Friday.

Black Friday in 1869 - A financial crisis took place in the American financial market.

Black Friday in 1919 - Worker in Glasgow goes on strike.

Black Friday in 1939 - A forest fire took place in Australia.

Black Friday in 1978 - Demonstrator’s bloodbath in Iran.

Black Friday in 1982 - The war of Falkland Islands

2. Black in funeral

When we talk about mourning costume, black becomes a general consensus. When we dig into the transformation of mourning costume, it is surprising that the color used on the mourning costume was white at the beginning.

In Japan ancient times, the nobilities’ mourning costumes are gray; the samurais’ with black lines and the average peoples’ are white. White symbolizes death is “a not dirty thing”, and it means that widows to swear not to re-marry. However, the color of mourning costume became black. Why it became black? There are two kinds of explanations. One is that an activity of unifying country people’ clothing. The clothing was decided to have five black lines on it. Because of the establishment of systems, the more people put black on the mourning costume; therefore the mourning costume became black.

Another said, the mourning costume became black could be traced back to the funeral of the commander solider. On the funeral, many famous people attended with black clothes. Because the advanced countries mourning costume is black. The mourning costumes follow to become black.

Because of these transformations, black is used to make the mourning costume. Indeed, black not only make the solemn atmosphere but also able to present the sadness of losing relatives.

3. Black cutlery

When we talk about cutlery, most of color is white in general. Because it can set off each color, and give people clean feelings. However, white is not the best color to set off others color. Because white is a bright color. Say with this, black is the better chose to set off the delicious food. In Japan, the tradition cutlery is used black. In sushi bar, used wooden pail with painting into black, so did the French restaurant. Without a doubt, what color can let self food look more delicious? The cooker is the cleanest people. So if you do not have confidence to your cook. Using black cutlery, let people feel delicious on the vision might be a good idea.

4. Black cats

In ancient times, people thought black cats are witch’s pet or embodiment of something evil. In addition to the cats are always thought that it is a devil animal. In 962, there are had killed hundreds of cats for sacrificial offering. In the “hunting witch” times, a lot of women and cats were killed. In the black times, many women were burned as the witch. And many children are hanging to death, just because they had once touched cats. However, after killed such many cats, people suffered from the bubonic plague. So that time’s people took the blame for all of the problems to black cats.

And in China’s legend if the Black cat jumps though the death body the death body would be come zombie. And there was another example about Black Cat, in England if the black cat stand in front of you and you touch its head you will have good luck but if you touch its tail you will have bad luck.

Black on the national flags has different significant meanings. By reading their illustration, we can have more understanding of black.
