再次對英國人冷嘲熱諷的罵人功力讚嘆不已！

7月6日英國《觀察者報》(Observer) 的每月運動專刊登了一篇名為〈十種最糟的現場觀賽運動項目〉(The 10 Worst Spectator Sports), 這十個項目列名如下：

一、 網球
二、 競走
三、 法國三項鐵人競賽
四、 英式∕美式 足球
五、 迴力球
六、 西洋棋
七、 高爾夫球
八、 國家足球友誼賽
九、 撞球
十、 冰上滾石
(在冰面上使圓石盤朝目標滑行的遊戲, 17世紀以來盛行於蘇格蘭)

該篇文章對於每個列名的運動項目都有一番評論, 其中最令我難忘的是對於網球、競走及冰上滾球的描述 – 非常貼切也非常好笑！

[網球 Tennis]

尤其是溫布頓…兩張男子決賽的的票要價2500英鎊, 但英國古怪多變的夏日天候, 使得觀眾花非常多的時間在雨中邊啜食著全世界最貴的草莓, 邊看著一大塊塑膠布覆蓋上整片球場又被移開…

Specifically, Wimbledon… Two tickets for the men’s final cost £2,500, while the vagaries of the English summer ensure the spectators spend much of their time in the rain watching a plastic sheet being shuttled back and forth while they nibble the world’s most expensive strawberries…

[競走 Race Walking]

從1908年開始, 競走就已經是奧林匹克的競賽項目之一, 但直到現在, 這個比賽看起來仍像是20個人拼死拼活得急著搶同一間廁所。

Walking has been an Olympic event since 1908, and yet still looks like 20 desperate people racing to reach a single toilet cubicle…

[冰上滾石 Curling]

沒有什麼比2002年冬季奧運時企圖創造冰上滾石遊戲風潮更能說明英國落沒的程度了。冰上滾石遊戲基本上是各種滾球遊戲 (只是它比較吵、較不輕鬆而且絕對是冷多了)以及家務的混合物。以英國隊為例, 對一般球迷而言最物超所值的景象是：四個長得不錯的女人站在冰上聊天。有時候會出現一種景象：其中一人投擲出一顆大大圓圓的石頭及兩個怪異的巨型掃把 – 像超時工作的清潔工一般, 此時會有另一個以無法清楚辨識的語言混雜著高低音調呼叫著。這簡直是瘋了…

Nothing better illustrates how far Britain has fallen than the attempt to generate some ‘curling fever’ during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Curling is, essentially, a mixture of bowls – only noisier, less relaxing and a good deal colder – and housework. Using the GB team as the benchmark, all that appears to be on offer to the average fan is the sight of four comfortable-looking women talking on ice. Occasionally, one launches a huge circular stone and two more wield large brushes, like cleaner on overtime, while someone else yodels in an indeterminate language. Madness…
