Chinese music awards, a resounding success

The Fifth Global Chinese Music Awards was an event to remember for THAM AI MEI who managed to see great singers from all over the region perform.

THE stars who attended the Fifth Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA) must have felt like they were about to get their report cards that night. After all, winning an award during the event meant that they had the support of listeners from the seven radio stations across the region, namely Malaysia’s 988, China’s Beijing Music Station, East Shanghai Station and Guang Dong Radio Station, Taiwan’s Hit FM, Hong Kong’s RTHK and Singapore’s Yes 933.

The atmosphere last Saturday at the Putra Stadium of the Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex was charged with suspense as fans turned out in full force to show their undying support for their favourite singers.

It was a grand affair indeed, with an elaborate stage complete with a giant revolving TV screen and some huge flat screens for the benefit of audience seated far away from the stage. Of course, the artistes were garbed in their glamorous best as well.

My favourite was Hong Kong singer Joey Yung, who defied the usual over-the-top Hong Kong style of dressing and went for a classic black tube dress instead.

Other superstars who upped the glitz factor include Taiwanese hotties Jolin Tsai, Wang Lee Hom and Mayday, Singapore’s JJ Lim and Tanya Chai, China singers Hins, Zhang Jie and Snow Wei, our very own Nicholas Teo, Penny Tai and Fish Leong as well as Hong Kong favourites Eason Chan and Sandy Lam.

One of the most unforgettable performances for the night was veteran artiste Sandy Lam, who won the Best Achievement Award for her years in the music industry. Her repertoire included her classics Ai Sang Yi Ge Bu Hui Jia De Ren (Loving Someone Who Never Comes Home) and Zhi Sao Hai You Ni (At Least There’s Still You).

There has never been a more lovely or dynamic diva in the Chinese music scene. Her crystal clear voice mesmerised the audiences and even bowled over many of the stars who were present. This writer was also entranced with the beautiful rendition of Ke Bu Rong Huan (Precious Moments) by the beautiful pair of Joey Yung and Hacken Lee as well as Tanya Chai’s Xuang Yi Dong Wu (Amphibian).

Yung was obviously the media’s favourite as she won the Media Recommended Award and was also the top five Most Popular Female Artistes.

“With this award, I promise to work even harder,” said a beaming Yung.

Chai was honoured to be recognised for her composing skills. “It’s such an honour to be sharing the Most Popular Composer title with other great talents,” she said.

Eason Chan was another singer whose star shone brightly that night as he was named the Regional Best Performer for Hong Kong.

“With awards like these, I hope that Chinese music will continue to grow and prosper,” said Chan. after receiving his much-deserved award. His popular tune Xi Yang Wu Xian Hao (An Unbeatable Sunset) was performed as the grand finale for the Top 25 Hits that night.

The other big winner for the night was, of course, Wang Lee Hom, with his female fans shouting out their adulation.

JJ Lim was also a surprise favourite that night, being one of the winners for Most Popular Composer and having his album Pian Hao 89757 (Serial Number 89757) named as one of the best albums for the year. In fact, this singer sang out his thank you speech after receiving his award. While the slew of fabulous performances and smooth running of the show certainly made the GCMA a rousing success, it was just a tad disappointing when Taiwanese popster Jolin Tsai was named the ultimate Most Popular Female Artiste. As adorable and sexy as she might be, she could hardly hold a candle to other divas like Joey Yung and Stephanie Sun in terms of musical talent. Whatever the voting-based results may be, the fifth GCMA has certainly helped bridge the gaps between Chinese music in the different regions of Asia.

No surprises

The 5th Global Chinese Music Awards this year saw almost all nominated stars walking home with a trophy

THOSE expecting nail-biting suspense at the 5th Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA) on Saturday night were sorely disappointed.

While fans screamed, applauded and cheered their idols on at the 10,000 capacity-filled Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, they did not have to worry about any of them leaving empty-handed.

It was best summed by a Taiwanese journalist at the media centre where many were filing live reports: ’What do you expect? Invite all these people from Hong Kong and Taiwan, then tell them we’re sorry?’

But let’s face it - it makes sense to share the pie. After all, billed as the industry’s most prestigious music awards this year, GCMA acknowledges the outstanding talents and efforts of various artistes around the globe.

And what can beat having a show that is a collaboration of seven Chinese radio stations (China’s Beijing Music Station RM97.4, Guang Dong Radio Station and East Shanghai Station, Hong Kong’s RTHK, Taiwan’s Hit FM and Chinese Radio Station, Singapore’s YES 933 and this year’s host, Malaysia’s 988) come together to boost an industry that’s flogged by blatant copyright infringement?

And for the nominated stars who turned up - including Hong Kong’s Hacken Lee, Sandy Lam, Joey Yung, Eason Chan, Nicholas Tse, Gigi Leung, Taiwan’s Mayday, Jolin Tsai, Wang Lee Hom, and Singapore’s very own Tanya Chua and JJ Lin.

The chart-toppers were suave prince Lee Hom and Mando-pop princess Jolin.

Lee Hom earned the highest notch on the fans’ scream chart, scooping awards for Most Popular Male Artiste, Top 5 Most Popular Artistes, Top 25 Hits for Xin Zhong De Ri Yue and Best Music Composition for Forever Love.

Most Popular Female Artiste award went to Jolin, who was also named Top 5 Most Popular Artistes and Best Stage Performer. Her song Ye Man You Xi also made it to the Top 25 Hits.

Another four-award winner was veteran Hacken, who proved that youth was no deciding factor in a competition like this.

He bagged awards for Most Versatile Artiste Of The Year, Top 5 Most Popular Male Artiste, Most Popular Duet (Ke Bu Rong Huan, performed with Joey) and Top 25 Hits for Ai Ke Yi Wen Shui.

Not to be outdone was homegrown talent JJ Lin who also took home four prizes - Best Album (89757), Most Popular Composing Artiste, Regional Best Performer and Top 25 Hits for Yi Qian Nian Yi Hou.

Be it coincidence or otherwise, JJ’s harvest sets the stage for next year’s GCMA in Singapore, to be hosted by YES 933.
