〈題目〉The Son of Beth

M : Hi, friends, I am back again. 可惜， Nonesuch 沒有來。
O： If he were here, what would avail you? 對你有何裨益？他是個 naysayer, 老是
說 “no such things”, 老是 negate 別人的說法，老是說 “Stuff and nonsense!”
D : 但他是 a righteous person, 是 a man of integrity, 雖然正經八百，卻 one hundred percent honest, 是 dependable 又 reliable 的 figure.
M : 我不管那 figure 是八百或 one hundred, 我要的只是 fun. 那號人物非常 fond of namesmanship, 而我最精於命名術，最能把 men's names 連到他們的 fates, 然
後 figure out 一些 dependable 或 reliable 的大道理。
D : 你說的都是 wry reasons, 就像 wry faces 一樣，歪得很 funny 罷了。
O : 他很 wry 嗎？ Wry 而不 wrong 沒關係。 Wry 與 right 也差不多。一個 “w” 不
發音，另一個 “gh” unpronounced, 只多個 “t”, 誰聽得到？
D : 不 hard of hearing 的人都會聽得到。少了那個 “t”, 就不是 right, 就變成「裸
麥」或「黑麥」，變成 “r-y-e” 的 “rye”。 差太多了！
M : 那更 wonderful, 可以做 rye bread, 也可以釀 rye whiskey, 最近台灣還 import 很
多 rye juice, 喝了聽說會 feel right.
O : 我喝過，我在 thinking: 為何不進口 oat juice 呢？蘇格蘭人會做 oatcake, 一定也會
用 oats 去釀 whiskey.
D : 錯了， whiskey 是用多種 grains 的 mash 加以 ferment, 然後 distill 出來的 strong
liquor, 裡頭 alcohol 的 percentage 很高。
O : Are you sure? 沒有 oats?
D : 我可以發個誓 make an oath, 或許偶爾會有一點，但 not necessarily 經常有。那些
穀粒，那些 grains 通常是 rye, wheat, corn, 或 barley.
M : 沒錯。黑麥、小麥、玉米，或大麥，就算沒有燕麥也會賣，也能弄成糊狀叫 mash, 然後---
O : 然後掉進幾根 lash 沒關係，把 rye mash 和 eye lash 放在一起去 ferment，發酵的
結果一定很体面。有那眼睫毛可以當 catalysis 催化劑，一定可以加速 ferment
的 process。
D : 加速你的 head 啦！你的 ox 脾氣已經變成 x-o 的 temper 哩！ Mr. Me, 趕快 say
what we can see, 免得他 distill 出來一大堆 awful 的 whiskey.
M : O.K. 沒問題。我來講那 Scotland, 但不講那 strong liquor, 而講那 great conqueror.
O : 蘇格蘭有偉大的 conqueror 嗎？穿 flannel skirts, 吹 bagpipes 的人，除了釀 whiskey
之外，也征服過世界嗎？
D : 他們的 descendents 已經征服 the whole world 了。
O : 誰呀？那些後代或 descendents 或 issue 或 offspring 是誰呀？
D : 沒聽過嗎？麥氏的子孫， Donald 的後代， never heard of?
M : 他只知道麥的子孫就是麥酒 ale, 或 beer, 或 whiskey, 不然就是眾多 ox 也就
是 oxen 的飼料。
D : Oxen 的 feed 通常是草料 fodder. 當然了，釀酒剩下的wheat, barley, oats, or rye, 不
管有沒有被 crushed 壓碎或被 ground 磨碎，成為 mash, 成為糊狀的 wort-
O : 成為 what? Work? Word?
M : 成為 worse than worms 的東西，成為 wort, 沒聽清楚嗎？
D : 是的，成為 wort, 那是一種 liquid, 一種加 malt 麥芽壓磨形成的麥汁。
M : 那 wort 原本是一種 plant, 一種 herb, 不是嗎？像 spleenwort 就是「脾草」。
O : 皮草？那是影星歌星穿的 fur? Wort 是 fur?
M : 去你的 fur 啦！那是可以治療脾臟病的藥草，是一種 medical herb, 知道嗎？
D : 好啦，好啦。Where are we now? 不是要講 conquer 世界的蘇格蘭 descendents
嗎？
O : 對呀，怎麼又講到 conquer 世界的 wine 或 liquor 去了？
D : 我說那麥氏的 offspring 或 issue 就是麥當勞，他們當了幾代的勞工 laborers 之
後，突然想到了賣點，把麥製的 bread 加進一點 stuffs, 就在 Macdonald's 賣起
來，從美國賣到台灣，賣到 the Chinese Mainland, 賣到 the whole world. 這不
是 conquer 世界嗎？
O : 說的也 right. 麥當勞先生也真會 sell, 把麥都當成勞工在賣。
M : 我說的那個 conqueror, 不是 Macdonald, 我說的是 the son of Beth.
O : The son of Beth? 那是 who?
D : 你是說 Macbeth?
M : You are right. 蘇格人的姓常是 “Mac-” 開頭，而「麥」或「麥可」或「馬克」
或「馬可」，就是 “son” 的意思。
D : 沒錯，英格蘭人的子孫常叫 “Johnson” 或 “Peterson” 或 “Richardson”, 但蘇
格蘭的子孫就叫 “Macdonald”，”MacArthur” 或 “MacLeish”.
O : 那你要說的 Macbeth 就是 Shakespeare 的「馬克白」嗎？他有 conquered 過 the
whole world 嗎？
M : 沒有，但 symbolically 他跟英國的 Elizabeth the First 一樣，是個很 ambitious 的
人，曾經 conquered 不少敵人，也曾經想當世界的 supreme sovereign 至尊。
D : 我認為你這種 connection 或 association 太過 far-fetched, 太牽強。你能給 further
explanation 嗎？
M : No problem. 英國的 Elizabeth 是個 virgin queen, 她終身不嫁，只愛 power, 這
個 Beth 因此是個 barren Beth, 是個不孕的 Beth, 沒有 baby 的 Beth.
O : 但蘇格蘭的 Macbeth 有 wife 呀！不生或沒生的是 Lady Macbeth, 不是他呀！
M : All the same, symbolically. 貝絲和 the son of Beth 都一樣 love power more than
babies. 他們都是 barren 的人，只是沒有 barren of ambition 而已。
D : Ha! Ha! 如果 Beth the First 或 the sons of Beth 都是 barren, 那今天還有伊莉莎白
二世嗎？還會有 Elizabeth Taylor 那有名的 movie star 嗎？
M : 我是說 symbolically, 所有愛江山的 kings 或 queens, 到頭來都會 barren, 都會死
而無後 die without issue, 結果變成個人或國家的一個 big issue 大問題。
D : 這是 sheer nonsense! 是 Stuff and nonsense! 世上 ambitious 的君王多的是，生
一大堆 offspring 的多的是， 而 die without issue 的人只是 only a few 而已，不
是 quite a few.
O : 對呀！現在英國的 Beth 不是 gave birth to 幾個 princes 和 princesses 嗎？而那
些王子公主不是鬧了不少 scandals 嗎？
M : 好啦，不跟你們 argue 這個 point. 我要說的 point 是： Macbeth 就是 the son of
beth, 而 “beth” 就是希伯萊文 the Hebrew language 的第二個 letter, 就像英文
的 “B” 或 “b” 或希臘文的 beta ㄧ樣，是字母中的老二。
D : So what?
M : 老二就 have「老二情結」啊，就會有一種自卑感 inferiority complex 變成的自
大狂 superiority complex 啊。
D : 那種情結應該叫 “The Satanic Complex” 才對。因為撒旦這個 bad egg, 就
是 cannot bear to be the second, 他就是 wants to be the first, 所以才想 conquer the
kingdom of God, 想要 become God himself.
O : True! 不要叫它 “The Second Complex”, 要叫它 “The Satanic Complex”.
M : Who are you?! To tell me to do this or that! 告訴你，我不會叫它 “The second
complex”, 但我會 insist on calling it “The second's complex”, 知道
嗎？ “the second's” 不是 “the second”。 「老二的」，不是「第二個
的」， see?
O : I can see this, 但是 I cannot see that. 難道你曾經 looked into the matter 過嗎？
你 proved 過 the son of Beth 是老二嗎？ Macbeth 的 大哥是誰？
M : Oh, 你這 ox, 牽到 Beijing 仍然是 ox. 人一定要當 the second eldest brother 才會
有 “the second's complex” 嗎？當副手的人，當 vice-commander, 當 vice-
president, 所有 rank second 的人，不是都很 vicious, 都有一股想要 vie with the
first, 想要變 victor 的 vice 嗎？
D : 是有那種 vice, 但那種 vice 也會變 virtue, 會使他敢去 venture his life for his
cause, 敢去 venture his health and wealth on his enterprise, 而到頭來---
O : 到頭來就像 Macbeth ㄧ樣，發現他只是個 poor player，發現人生是 a brief
candle, 是一個白痴講的 tale.
M : 你還懂 this much 呀？是的，所有 sons of beth, 都想變成 sons of alpha, 都想
把 alpha-bet 變成 bet-alpha..
D : I bet that's impossible, 所以到頭來排行老二的 beta 或 beth 會變成什麼？會有
什麼 outcome？
M : 它的結果就是 come to the end, 變成排到很後面的 veth, 變成很 vain, 變成一點也
沒，變成因為沒有一點 dot, 所以說錯做錯也停不下來，變成一個老糊塗 a
dotard, 永遠在那邊溺愛他的奇想 doting on his whims. 奇想自己是個 victor, 而
事實上卻只是個失敗的 villain, 只是沒有 victory 的 “V”, 只能排到 alphabet 的
第幾位啊？
O : Let me count. “A-B-C-...”
D : 別數啦！ V是第 twenty-second 的 letter, 只贏 w, x, y, z 四個而已，多麼 pitiable
啊！
M : 是很 pitiable, 所以他會 tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow 的像 worm ㄧ樣，
一直 crawl, ㄧ直爬，爬到人生的 last syllable.
O : Life 的最後音節？那是什麼 sound 呢? 是 “O!” 嗎？
D : 也有可能是 “Ai!” 的一聲。跟 “wry” 或 “rye” 押韻的 “哎！”
M : 我看是無法 rhyme 了。對他而言，所有話語都是 full of sound and fury, 都是充
滿狂囂而已，還有 anything like 押韻嗎？
D : 就算有 rhyme, 也是 signifying nothing, 不是嗎？
M : 是的，一切都了無意義。反正老二已經當不成 the first and foremost， 而 the
second 已經 fallen to the twenty-second, 這種情形有何 meaning? 有何 significance?
O : 這就是 Macbeth 的 fate, 就是 the son of beth 的 fate. 聽來人名還真有 something
in it 呢。那麼，我的綽號叫 ox, 有一天會當 Oxford 的校長嗎？
D : Next to impossible. 英國的大學校長叫 chancellor, 通常名譽上由現今的國王或女
王來擔任。你不是 Beth, 又不是 the son of Beth, 你哪有 chance?
M : 英國大學的實際負責人是副校長 vice-chancellor. 如果你的 ox-temper 沒改，有
一天 vice 的事情做多了，變成很 vicious 的時候，說不定真的會被一些 ox-
heads 選為 vice-chancellor 的。
D : 那種 chance 應該也是不多。你連去 Oxford 唸書的機會都沒有，何必 keep 那
種 whim 呢？把突來的奇想化為 reality 吧。 Come on, let's go! 大家去喝一
碗 oxtail soup 好了。
M : A good idea. Ox 也會 hungry 吧？ Let's go!
