TO THE EDITOR:
I am writing in response to the article titled "Official requests probe on e-mail" that ran Monday. I am deeply concerned by the exchange of comments between Ms. Elyse Crystall and her student.
Ms. Crystall and her student have the rights to express their viewpoint on homosexuality in the class discussion.
However, using the class e-mail list to rebut a student's comment only shows the immaturity of Ms. Crystall in handling the situation. Students have the right to freely express their viewpoints in class discussion without fear of retaliation.
As a Christian alumni living in the San Francisco Bay area, I have witnessed numerous accounts of verbal "exchange" between homosexuals and heterosexual advocates.
In the midst of the debate, many Christians forget that God wants us to love all of our neighbors.
Even though this does not connote approval of homosexual behavior, Christians should not express "hatred" towards homosexuals.
Any sort of violent behavior would not be approved by God. An open dialogue is the only way to understand the viewpoints from both sides of the issue. I highly encourage and challenge Christians on campus to engage in conversations with LGBT students.
Without any understanding of the opponent's standpoints, a pure act of condemnation is not the solution to resolve the conflicts.
