5G開啟了發展的黃金時代，在智能生活、養老、教育、工業、交通、醫療、農業等領域的前景極為廣闊，將為傳統產業的調整和改革提供新的動力。 特別是它給智能領域帶來了深刻的變化，使智能制造、智能醫療、智能家居、智能旅遊從理想走向現實。 同時，作為新技術、新產業的核心支撐，它將為未來新技術革命和應用帶來質的飛躍。 數據顯示，在未來“十四五”期間，5G將帶動中國經濟增長15.2萬億元。

5g 以其在信息革命進程中的獨特作用和影響，正成為世界科技強國競爭的焦點。中國、美國、日本、德國、韓國、英國和法國這七個國家成為5g 技術發展的第一線。根據歐洲電信標准化協會(etsi)的數據，截至2018年底，5g 標准所需的專利申請總數為11681件，其中華為約占17% ，中興約占9% ，大唐約占5% ，專利申請總數為3542件，占30% 以上，居世界首位。截至2019年8月，32個國家的56家運營商已宣布在其現有網絡上部署5 g 技術。到目前為止，已有100多家來自不同行業的廠商開發了5g 終端產品，其中40多家終端廠商已經推出了各種類型的5g 終端產品和905g 終端產品。一項調查顯示，到2020年，全球5 g 智能手機的發貨量有望超過2億部。

中國移動研究院首席科學家易表示，5G在C端不僅僅是流量服務。5G更大的作用在於賦能成千上萬的企業。中國移動已經設立了300億元的5G聯合創新基金，以促進各行各業的合作夥伴共同探索5G應用。
