Le “Parkour”

“You just have to look, you just have to think, like children.” This is the vision of parkour according to Sebastien Foucsn, one of the original Paris youths who invented this quasi-sport that involves running through suburbia like a ninja late for a weeding.

Parkour, sometimes called free running, is definitely not child’s play. It takes training and dedication. Then again, if you don’t see it as a game, you won’t be any good at it. One popular definition of parkour reads: Parkour is a physical discipline inspired by human movement. It focuses on uninterrupted, efficient forward motion over, under, around and through obstacles (both human-made and natural) in one’s environment. Such movement may involve running, jumping, climbing and more complex techniques. The goal of parkour is to adapt one’s movement to any given obstacle in one’s path.

Sebastien and his friend David Belle take most of the credit for inventing parkour in 1988. They were inspired by the natural fitness and fluid movements they saw in aboriginal people everywhere. With some other teenagers, they formed a clan called the “Yamakasi,” which means “strong body, strong spirit, strong person” in Lingala, a language from Congo.

Parkour didn’t remain hidden away in France for long. The France filmmaking giant, Luc Besson, put parkour into a chase scene for his 2000 blockbuster, Taxi 2,and then featured the new art form in his 2006 thriller Distric B13.

Now, parkour is turning up on collage campuses and city centers all across America and Europe. There are over 25,000 YouTube clips to choose from if you want to see what it really looks like. To become a “traceur,” as parkour runners are known, is a very gradual process. One false move can mean broken bones.

As happened with skateboarders, the increasingly common traceurs ( and traceuses ) are making some people angry. Authorities on collage campuses worry about safety and liability. But in many areas, including some campuses, serious parkour practitioners manage to win respect and avoid problems. This has been accomplished by staying safe. Parkeur may be about looking graceful, but it has never been about showing off. The idea is to be fluid in your motion, not to try things you know you shouldn’t.
