Bend

Why did I feel so angry? Isn’t it waiting for hours to get you passport renewed in an immigration office in Malaysia is a normal thing?

I didn’t expect to wait, I guess. I went to the Pusat Bandar Damansara Immigration office this morning to renew my passport. I intended to use the Kippas system which I can renew and pay the fees one-stop, but I end up filling form and waiting in a long queue as the machine couldn’t scan my passport.

The officer relates, “You must have bend your passport, the chip rosak already, the machine couldn’t scan it. You can’t bend your passport.”

I smelt blame in his words. My anger swells up inside me. I didn’t like it when people accusing me of not taking good care of my own property. I think I took enough care of my passport by not loosing it and bring it with me whenever and wherever I travel.

How do you expect a person who uses his passport for almost 5 years still looks the same as it was when he got it? Maybe some people can take real good care of his passport by not ‘bending’ it and damage the chip inside. I carried my passport with me all the time during travelling, how can I not accidentally ‘bending’ the passport?

Then, he started to ‘bend’ my passport so that the machine can read the chip inside. But the machine fails to read it. Later, he suggested that I went upstairs to the counter and proceed with my passport renewal process.

I had to buy a form which cost me RM1 and photocopy my IC with RM 0.30. And Waiiiiiiiiit. My number is 1254, and the number showed on the screen is 1199, long way to go.

I sat down, my anger is boiling inside me. I expect to end the whole process with the machine in maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

I had no choice but to wait; I took out Number9Dream by David Mitchell and started to read. After a few pages of reading, my anger died inside me.

This is ’expected’ when visit to government agencies; unless you’re somebody. Unfortunately we’re nobody.
It’s still a long way to go for a ’MESRA & CEKAP’ government. I guess, we still have to wait, and wait, and wait.

I am more curious in knowing why Fei started to write in English. Influence from the book Number9Dream?

Nightraveller,

I don’t know why either, it’s just that this story finds its form in english within my mind. I just wrote it down. I guess this is the way it is...

I strongly suggest you read this book, the author teaches english in Japan for 8 or 9 years...the story’s background based in Tokyo...written in different form of literature genre:sci-fi, yakuza, fable etc. It’s sad, funny and wit. I have finished half of it, plan to bring it with me to Singapore.
