Joe Egan和Gerry Rafferty倆位蘇格蘭人原為同學，在1972合組了Stealers Wheel樂團，此曲為倆人所合寫，並在1973年發行。

此曲原是模仿Bob Dylan於1963發行，有關諷刺共產主義的政治歌曲《Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues》，由於歌曲的主題、聲調等都極為相似，甚至還被誤認是Dylan的歌曲。不過此曲說的是參加一場音樂人的盛宴，顯然是受不了左右那些或許是唱片製作、或許是經銷商等人的嘴臉，才會在歌詞中寫出：
Clowns to the left of me
jokers to the right
here I am, stuck in the middle with you

未料到的是，此曲推出後迭獲好評，在英國排行榜拿到第8名，甚至成為國際暢銷曲，在美國告示牌熱門100排行榜奪得第6名，卻也是Stealers Wheel樂團唯一較知名的歌曲。

1992，美國電影導演Quentin Tarantino ( 昆汀‧塔倫提諾 ) 執導的一部犯罪驚悚片《Reservoir Dogs》( 港譯：落水狗，台譯：橫行霸道 )，在片中一段殘忍的割耳情節，就使用了此首歌曲。此部電影算是Quentin的成名之作 ( 之後又有《黑色追緝令》、《追殺比爾》、《決殺令》等多部知名作品 )，而也連帶使得此曲又再擴增了一些歌迷。

此曲原由Gerry Rafferty主唱，Joe Egan担任合音，以下所貼音樂影帶錄製時，Gerry Rafferty已離開樂團，故只能由Joe Egan假唱。Gerry Rafferty於2011死於「肝功能衰竭」，極有可能是因其長期酗酒所導致，享年63歲。
