此曲為美國樂團Steve Miller Band於1973發行的專輯《The Joker》中的同名單曲，次年(1974)初打進了美國告示牌排行榜，並攻下了冠軍寶座，另在澳洲、加拿大及荷蘭，也都位於前20名。未料到的是，16年後的1990，在英國因一支Levi's牛仔褲的電視廣告，引用此曲作為背景音樂，竟讓此曲又站上了英國及愛爾蘭的排行榜冠軍。

此曲最讓聽歌者感到困惑的，應該就是歌詞中「pompatus of love」的意思了，一般認為pompatus是個nonce word ( 在某種情境下所創造的字 )，而Steve Miller也是從一首1953的Doo-Wop歌曲《The Letter》中聽來的。而在2002的《洛杉磯雜誌》，一篇名為「In The Secret Country」的文章提到，在「牛津英文字典」中確實有pompatus這個字存在，意思是「to act with pomp and splendor」，而「pompatus of love」的意思，或也可譯成「浮誇的愛」？

另在歌詞中出現的像是「Space Cowboy」、「Gangster of Love」、「Mourice」，則都是Steve Miller其他歌曲的歌名，而在1973的《Enter Mourice》的這一首，也曾唱出過「The pompatus of love」。關於「I'm the Midnight toker」，toke的俚語是指吸一口煙或吸入一次毒品，在此處的意思應該是「我是個午夜的大麻煙吸食者 ( 在午夜是不想被別人知道 )。也有說此曲的Toker這個字係引用自1970的暢銷歌曲《One Toke Over The Line》。

此曲另一特殊處是在唱完第三句歌詞後的「滑音」吉它，的確讓人印象深刻。有音樂板主認為：「這首歌是個自戀的渣男，想騙涉世未深的少女上床，但整首聽起來你卻覺得這渣男不可恨反而可愛。……。」或許是吧！有些人泡妞喜歡將自己的「不良」先坦白出來，遇上可接受、「母驚死」的那就來吧！
