加拿大女歌手Anne Murray於1969以一首《Snowbird》闖出名號，之後陸續也有多首歌曲入榜，而從1974翻唱The Beatles的《You Won't See Me》獲得第8名後，成績開始下滑並沉寂了起來。直至1978的這首《You Needed Me》，才又重回排行榜，不僅奪得了冠軍，還為她贏回了一座葛萊美獎。

Anne Murray事後接受訪談說到，其實她並不訝異這首歌會有好成績，因她在試唱時就被歌曲感動到淚崩。依據此曲的作者Randy Goodrum的說法，這是首關於「無條件而不值接受(？)的愛 ( unconditional undeserved love )」的歌曲。「You Needed Me」是過去式，過去的許多不完美都有人支持和協助，而現今呢？或也有藉古勵今之意 (？)。歌曲的詮釋各有不同，許多聽友對照歌詞內容，認為只有上帝才會如此地偉大無私，而將之視為是一首「福音歌曲」。至於將「You Needed Me」直譯成「我需要你」，看歌詞上下文，似尚為通順，唯是否真正符合詞義，恐仍待由英文高手來釋疑了。

1999，愛爾蘭男子團體Boyzone ( 男孩特區 ) 翻唱此曲，在英國單曲排行榜獲得冠軍，唱片也賣出超過20萬張。
