Matteo Pistono的「In The Shadow of the Buddha」

這一陣子看了一些有關圖博的書和電影(包括紀錄片)。
除了想多了解圖博之外,也是因為自己有些疑問。
例如:為何圖博人得集體承受外在加諸於他們身上的苦難,等等。
我的這些疑問目前為止仍沒有得到解答。

這本書的作者Matteo Pistono是在Wyoming州長大的美國人,後來成為藏傳佛教的信徒,也從事促進圖博人權的工作。
他不是轉世喇嘛,只是一般人,我想或許我比較能relate,所以找了書來看。

書中提到他對圖博人被打壓的憤怒:

I walked to my cabin with a storm in the distance. Sitting upright in bed with a flickering candle nearby, I concluded my evening meditation. In these formal meditation sessions, thoughts would evaporate upon arising, like mist hitting sunlight. I could remain simply aware in that pregnant vastness between the end of one thought and before the next one began. That awareness would seem to expand beyond times, into a space of vivid awareness of awareness itself.

When I was not sitting on my meditation cushion, when I was confronted with episodes of torture and unjust political situations, that spaciousness vanished. I lay awake with angry thoughts darting through my mind.


Wangchen 是一位圖博treasure revealer:

“Should you wish to look into the essential nature of mind, do not fabricate or transform anything, and do not 'meditate,' but rather, allow whatever arises to be liberated by itself, without inviting or following after thoughts,″ Wangchen said in a monotone voice.

“By settling into the natural state, one's thoughts are liberated spontaneously. At all times and in every type of behavior, this alone is sufficient as the universal method of liberation. Sustaining this natural condition, there is not the slightest thing to be done. Just rest evenly in awareness.″

Wangchen在作者meditate的時候,唸了一個打壓圖博人的中共官員的名字:

My mind exploded into an angry haze on hearing the name of the Communist Party leader in Lhasa.

“Instead of acting from that swirling rage that is within you at this moment, recognize it just for what it is —a powerful force of energy—and let that force blaze your awareness, not your anger,″ Wangchen counseled.

“Don't concentrate on the object—that person in Lhasa—of your anger, but rather, rest in that which knows. Rest in the awareness itself, without any particular focus.″

Wangchen repeatedly stoked my powerful emotions as we sat together. This was not a peaceful process. After some time, I found the resentful thoughts would arise just as they had before but they had no power to stick in my mind. When I did not think about the thoughts, the thought itself simply evaporated, leaving only thought-free awareness.

“Now, Matteo, you are liberating your anger,″ Wangchen said. “This is the real meaning and ultimate instruction for wielding the phurba. This is how you will speed toward enlightenment and, as a bodhisattva, bring benefit to others!″
