Stop This One Thing and Watch Your Mindset Change

I don’t like corporate work. I don’t enjoy working for a boss who tells me what I should be doing every minute of the day. I don’t like the hierarchical nature of the workplace, my lack of passion for the work I need to do, or living for the weekend. From the moment I stepped foot out of education, I knew it wasn’t for me.

However, I still have to show up there 5 times a week.

You could say then, that my attitude is rather pessimistic during my working day. That I curse my luck and mope around, but that isn’t the case. I mean, it use to be my mentality, but not anymore.

I make an active choice each day to not complain my way through my life -frustrating it may get.

Here’s why.

Complaining Long-Term Gets You Nowhere

None of this is to say that we shouldn’t complain. Maybe you don’t enjoy your day job as I do, maybe your boss gets on your nerves, maybe you dislike your colleagues, where you live, or resent the fact you don’t have much money. Maybe some things in your life just don’t sit right with you, and that’s okay.

I’m not here to invalidate your experience. It’s good to complain about the things that bug you; after all, it’s the recognition that something isn’t aligned with you. However, if the thing you’re unhappy about is a situation that you can’t change right now, long-term complaining is useless and self-sabotaging.

I may dislike my corporate job but I make a daily effort to not complain about it because;

1. I can’t do anything about it right now

2. Complaining will only hinder my reality further

When you complain consistently about a situation that can’t be changed, you are choosing to dig your heels into the ground and make your situation worse. As Carl Jung says, “What we resist, persists”. Furthermore, if I can’t change my reality and am dissatisfied with it already, what good is it me adding to that and making my reality even worse? If nothing can be done? It’s pointless.

Radical Acceptance As A Way Forward

Many people assume that learning to accept your reality for what it is means you must like it, but they couldn’t be more wrong. You can mentally note that you don’t agree with something and commit to not cursing it every moment of the day. The two are not the same.

When we are unable to change our circumstances right there at that moment, acceptance is the only logical option. Not only does it stop you from making your day worse, but it frees up mental space that can be used to get you out of that place.

If I was spending my life in rejection to my day job there would be no hope for me pursuing a side-project in my spare time. I’d be too exhausted. Negative energy is taxing and it drags us down. In learning to accept your current predicament for what it is, you’re free to be productive. Free to think about your next steps, and to put as much energy as you can into it.

Don’t be fooled that learning to accept your life is going to result in settling for less. It isn’t the case; not if you’re committed to finding a way out. In fact, it will provide you with the emotional and physical freedom to do so. To be able to go home and research what you want to do next, to start saving money, to pick up a side-project, to explore your passions, to reach out to new people. Acceptance frees you up; complaining ties you down.

How To Infuse Optimism Into Your Life

Negative bias is a thing but that doesn’t mean you can’t be optimistic — it may just take some practice.

Bringing awareness to your mental patterns is the first step to changing them. Each time you catch yourself complaining, apply a different perspective. Change “I hate this, why am I here?” to “Is there anything I can do to change my situation right now?” if yes, then do so; if not, then pledge to accept it for what it is. Do this repeatedly, as if you’re a regular complainer, it’ll likely be a habit by now.

In your acceptance, you suddenly love your situation, but you’ll be surprised at how much more relaxed you feel. In the absence of the emotional weight you’ve been subjecting yourself to, you can then turn your attention to what can be done to move forward. If you don’t know, then it’s time for some soul searching so don’t be afraid to reach out for help if need be.

How My Mindset Has Changed Over Time

I’ve been working in the corporate landscape for 3 years now. Do I now love it? No, but my spare time has been spent well. I’ve built up a blog and pursued my love for personal development in my spare time. I intend to make it my career one day but until then, I won’t be cursing my life for what it has to be right now.

Over time, consistently reframing your thoughts will change your overall mindset. Complaining isn’t a default mode to me, anymore. When I’m faced with difficulties, my automatic response is to note my rejection and accept it for what it is. From there, I can work to change it, if the change is possible.

I encourage you to try this on. To commit for the next few days to not complain about something. To mentally acknowledge your dissatisfaction and then accept it for what it is. See how you feel and see what comes up for you. Maybe it’s time that emotional weight got lifted.
