Super 8 Stories
By Emir Kusturica
Super 8 Stories By Emir Kusturica
A documentary which speaks about music, music which speaks
about a world - the wild, mad, dramatic world of the Balkans.
The "No Smoking" Band was founded twenty years ago in former Yugoslavia. No Sooner had the band formed at the beginning of the
eighties than they incited public displeasure on account of their
disrespectful comments on Marshall Titio's demise. Like a travelling
people, however, they have succeeded in withstanding all manner of
political tragedies ever since, without ever once asking anyone for
their protection.
Emir Kusturica has been a band member since 1986,Kusurica's son,
Stribor, joined the band as a drummer in 1994. "No Smoking" created
the music for Kusturica's film "BLACK CAT, WHITE CAT," Since then
the band's irresistible brand of Balkan Punk has found fans all over
the world.
Emir Kusturica: "No Smoking are more than merely a rock'n'roll
band, They are a phenomenon that during the eighties, changed the
intonation and language of music not only in Sarajevo, but also
throughout Yugoslavia. All kinds of different styles of Balkan music
have left their mark on the band's repertoire. It is an explosive
mixture of jazz and gypsy music, in which southern Serb trumpets as
well as the melancholy sound of Asian influences are to be found"
The film sets out in pursuit of the origins of the frantic,
irresistible music some call Balkan Punk. Music that the world has
learned to love in the film of Emir Kustrurica, especially BLACK
CAT, WHITE CAT.
The protagonists of the film are the band No Smoking, formed "when
everything still had to happen." Like a Gypsy caravan, they have
passed through all the tragedies of that region's history without
taking sides.
The film begins on the band's triumphant 2000 tour. We begin to
find out each member of the group. Their stories then interview
and accumulate, as in every film by Emir Kusturica, in an assemblage
of the most varied materials.
