美國鄉村歌手兼詞曲作家Bobby Bare在開始要走流行音樂這條路時，是想賣一些他所寫的歌，但都乏人問津。後來終於獲得Capitol唱片公司的一紙合約，錄了幾首搖滾單曲，但也都不成功。入伍當兵前，寫了一首《The All American Boy》並附上示範錄音帶給他的朋友Bill Parsons，但Parsons的唱片公司竟然捨棄了Parsons所錄製的版本，改以Bare的原示範版本發行，而仍由Parsons掛名。問題來了，此首《The All American Boy》於1958打進了告示牌熱門100排行榜，並高掛第2名，Bare當時等於是被「黑」掉了。

但人生的命運是早就註定的了，該發的絕跑不掉。1963，Bobby Bare以兩首改編的翻唱曲《Detroit City》及《500 Miles Away From Home》，成為暢銷的國際級歌手，且前者在次年還替他贏得了一座葛萊美獎。Bobby Bare另首和鄉村女歌手Skeeter Davis合唱的《A Dear John Letter》也是台灣老歌友非常熟悉的歌 ( 哈哈，此曲台長尚未貼。)。

此首《Town That Broke My Heart》開始的旋律和曲中口白的部份，很難不令聯想到有《Detroit City》的影子 ( 其實前述的3首歌都有口白部份 )，或許是食髓知味嚐到了得獎的甜頭，想再如法炮製一番。Bobby Bare之前的這兩首歌曲，流露出的都是失意的滄桑，此曲不同於述說遊子的心情，而是失戀的傷感，為免觸景傷情，要向此傷心地說再見了。此曲於1968僅以單曲發行，獲得鄉村榜第16名。
