John "Jay" Traynor曾為美國樂團The Mystics 的主唱，後於1960離開自組團體，該團於大學校園演唱時被發掘，再通過名製作雙人組Leiber and Stoller的試唱而簽約，原本製作人欲取團名為Binky Jones and the Americans，但經Traynor的堅持，最後只使用家族的暱稱Jay，而成為了Jay and the Americans。

1962，Jay and the Americans發行了專輯《She Cried》，同名的主打歌在告示牌熱門榜達到了第5名，也是該團的首支暢銷曲。之後翻唱此曲的團體和歌手也不少，像是女子團體The Shangri-Las 《He Cried》( 1966 / #65 )、男子團體The Letterman ( 1970 / #6 on the AC charts )，歌手則有Del Shannon、P.J. Proby等等。

好運不常，Jay and the Americans接下來的兩首單曲均成績不佳，Traynor因而離團單飛。Traynor離團倒不打緊，但少了Jay，團名又當如何？此時，有The Empires樂團的吉他手Marty Sanders加入，也帶來了同團的David Black，在David Black同意採用Jay Black的名字後，就由他來接替Traynor的位置，是為第二位的Jay。

在Jay Black擔任主唱的期間，應該是Jay and the Americans最為發光的時期，推出了幾首知名的暢銷曲：《Come a Little Bit Closer》( 1964 / #3 )、《Cara Mia》( 1965 / #4 ) 以及1969翻唱The Drifters的《This Magic Moment》，此曲雖然只達到排行榜第6名，卻獲得美國唱片工業協會 ( RIAA ) 頒發銷售超過百萬張的金唱片。

好景也不長，Jay and the Americans在1973分裂，團員各奔前程，只除了Jay Black使用此團名，繼續和其他不同的音樂人一起合作演唱。2006，Jay Black因賭債問題申請破產，他所擁有的團名---Jay and the Americans被托管人以10萬美元賣給了創團團員之一的Sandy Deanne，幾位老團員也因此再聚合，又另外招募了一位聲音相似的主唱，恰巧這位老兄的暱稱也是Jay。所以，這位John "Jay" Reincke也成為了該團的第三位Jay。
