這首《Jambalaya》是美國鄉村歌手Hank Williams的自寫自唱曲，於1952發行，獲得非連續14週鄉村榜的冠軍。而一般咸信，另位美國鄉村歌手兼詞曲作家Moon Mullican，也對此曲的編寫有若干的貢獻，但為了不和其所屬的唱片公司 ( King Records ) 產生財務上的問題，只在私下接受此曲的權利金。

《Jambalaya》的歌曲旋律是改編自Cajau ( 移居美國路易斯安那州的法人後裔 ) 的歌曲《Big Texas》，但歌詞的內容則完全不同。《Big Texas》述說的是失戀，歌者的女人跟另外的男人跑了，一起去了德州。而《Jambalaya》則是歌者划著平底的獨木舟去到了Bayou ( 應是指流速平緩的河道支流區 )，參加女友Yvonne和其家人的盛宴。宴席中的Cajau菜餚有Jambalaya ( 什錦飯 )、Crawfish Pie ( 淡水的小龍蝦派 )、filé Gumbo ( 秋葵濃湯 ) 以及喝著由玻璃罐釀製的水果酒 ( liquor from fruit jar )。Yvonne是這位男主角的「ma chère amie」( Cajau法語 )，英文意思是「my good girlfriend」，但Williams將「ma chaz ami-o」視為一字，在之前又加了「my」，而在字尾加「o」，只是為了押韻。

此曲在各個世代均有許多翻唱者，包含有「木匠兄妹」、「清水合唱團」、「小野麗沙」等，甚至也有改成自己國家文字的歌詞。華人女歌手張露 ( 歌手杜德偉的母親 )在50年代中期率先推出國語版的《小癩麻》，後鄧麗君也於1976翻唱此曲的木匠兄妹版。
