1967年，幾名英國愛丁堡的小伙子共組樂團，自取名為The Saxons。不久後，他們有了經紀人，而經紀人要求他們更改團名，他們就拿大頭釘隨手往地圖上一插，落點正好在密西根州的Bay City，因此就改名為Bay City Rollers ( 海灣城市搖滾客 )。

他們在愛丁堡一帶唱了三年，也算是小有名氣。1970年，Bell唱片的一位主管因未趕上飛機而看到了他們的表演，決定將他們簽入旗下。簽入Bell後，次年(1971)即有首支翻唱單曲打入英國排行榜第9名。後樂團經過了幾次陣容的更換，自1974年起，在兩位名製作人的策劃之下，掀起了一股Roller旋風，連續有7首單曲進入了英國排行榜的前十名。他們清純討喜的外型和青春的活力，成為了英國青少年的最愛，所到之處尖叫聲不斷，而被稱之為Rollermania ( 搖滾客狂熱 )，也是在Beatlesmania ( 披頭狂熱 ) 之後所僅見。

可是老美好像不太吃這一套，他們幾首在英國紅透半邊天的單曲就是打不進美國排行榜。但唱片公司 ( Bell改組後之Arista )老闆不信邪，憑著直覺選了一首原未擬發行單曲的《Saturday Night》，覺得應該會適合美國市場，再透過衛星的電視直播，隔洋向美國青少年展示放送他們的人氣魅力。這招促銷方式果然奏效，這首歌在1976年1月，終於站上了美國排行榜的第1名，但也是Bay City Rollers在美國唯一的一首冠軍曲。
