這位具有墨西哥血統的佛老兄，其成功也是相當具有傳奇性。童年時跟著父母在農場打工，就喜歡模仿收音機中的鄉村歌手哼哼唱唱。16歲即離開學校，17歲加入陸戰隊，待了三年，因喝酒常被關禁閉，最後被軍事法庭裁定撤職。退伍後回到德州，在一些夜總會、酒吧和小酒館賣唱，走的是德州和墨西哥的曲風路線，在當地還算小有名氣。1960因持有大麻被捕，判刑五年。他在服刑時常於週末演唱娛樂獄中人員，三年後獲得假釋並重返音樂界，也進入大學攻讀社會學。

1971年Freddy Fender遇見了他生命中的貴人，一位名滿德州的製作人Huey Meaux，在他的鼓勵下進了錄音室，以英文和西班牙文翻唱了那首《Before The Next Teardrop Falls》，1975年5月登上了熱門和鄉村排行榜的雙料冠軍。然後，再重新錄製他自己在1959的這首《Wasted Days And Wasted Nights》，也得到熱門榜的第8名，自此名利雙收。
