What’s Duphalac?1

The active ingredient of Duphalac® is lactulose, a disaccharide synthesized from lactose. Lactulose is a synthetic sugar, which does not occur naturally and cannot be degraded by animal or human enzymes. Lactulose is also referred to as an NDO (non-digestible oligosaccharide) and reaches the colon unchanged with only few available calories – 13kcals per 20ml (13.34g) dose. Here it is degraded by specific bacteria and broken down into low-molecular weight organic acids, essentially lactic, acetic, butyric and propionic acids. Thus, the intestinal contents are acidified and the osmotic pressure and the filling volume in the colon are increased, it makes the stool softer and easier to pass, by drawing water into the bowel. It is not absorbed into your body.

PHARMACEUTICAL FORMs

  • Oral solution, a clear viscous liquid, colourless to brownish yellow. 
  • Oral solution flavoured with plum aroma, a clear, viscous liquid, colourless to brownish yellow. 
  • Powder for oral administration, white to almost white, crystalline powder.

Lactulose 在下半部腸道被分解成有機酸。這些有機酸導致腸道內的酸鹼值( pH )降低，且透過水份滯留的作用，使糞便的體積增加。這些作用刺激結腸的蠕動，並使糞便的硬度正常化，恢復結腸正常生理節律及解除便秘。於門系肝腦病變(PSE, portal systemic encephalopathy) 及肝昏迷前期，其作用是來自於藉由增加嗜酸性細菌 (如嗜乳酸桿菌Lactobacillus) 來抑制蛋白質分解細菌，以離子型態捕捉氨，以腸道的低酸鹼度及滲透壓作用，清除並調節細菌性氮的代謝。

頑固便秘的保健：1.養成正確對待便意和排便習慣，越強行大便越是便秘。2.多食疏菜水果，增加纖維攝取。3.不濫用瀉藥。4.辛熱刺激的食物不要吃。5.保持運動，可順時針摸腹促進腸道運動。6.因其他疾病或藥物引起便秘者，應徵詢醫生調整藥物組合。
