美國總統川普與北韓領導人金正恩上個月的口水戰引發全球關注，根據《路透社》引述《韓聯社》報導，川普11月訪問南韓時，可能會前往位於南北韓38度線的
「非軍事區」（Demilitarized Zone，DMZ），用望遠鏡探察北韓敵人。川普此行也會訪問日本、中國大陸、越南和菲律賓。
美國副總統潘斯今年4月就已前往非軍事區的聯合國軍事基地「柏尼法斯營」（Camp Bonifas）聽取簡報、探視駐營美軍官兵。他當時重申美國對付北韓不排除任何可能性，
「有一段時間是戰略忍耐，但戰略忍耐的時代已經結束了」。

「非軍事區」是全球最劍拔弩張的地區之一，使這個名稱顯得格外諷刺。前總統歐巴馬在2012年就曾用望遠鏡勘查北韓的動靜，另一位前總統柯林頓也在1993年訪問該地。當時柯林頓表示，這塊40公里寬、250公里長的土地是
「地球上最可怕的地方」。
此行將是川普首度以總統身分訪問朝鮮半島。消息人士透露，
總統會對北韓傳達強烈的訊息，「他可能做一些事，像是前往非軍事區，他的幕僚正在做相關準備。」報導指出，白宮上月底派人到南韓察看川普可能訪問的地點，包括板門店停戰村和非軍事區的瞭望塔。
