” 關於苦難他們從未錯看...”──奧登的詩

讀後殖民理論家霍米‧巴巴的評介，得知他年輕時立志做詩人，並著迷於奧登的詩。於是找了一本奧登的詩選集。隨手一翻，讀到一行熟悉的詩句
” About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters: ...
接著想起來是 John Russell 在《現代藝術的意義》一書的序裡，挪用奧登的詩句，說，雖然「老大師們對苦難知之甚稔」但新時代的新苦難有待新大師們表現，從這裡他引出了現代藝術的立論基石，像孟克的《吶喊》、畢卡索的《煤氣室》，都是新時代背景的產物。

回過頭來，我想了解奧登在這首詩哩，究竟說了些什麼。於是將奧登這首詩翻譯如下，算是淺譯吧，因為蠻有可能許多辭有雙關的歧義；此外，第一、二段的書寫必有所本，第二段中部分指涉了耶穌聖嬰的誕生，卻無法得知是誰/和誰的畫，這些便不加深研了。至於韻的部分，勉強把握住第一、第四和最末句的尾韻罷了。

關於苦難他們從未錯看
這些老大師多麼熟知
苦難在人間的處境：當其發生
如何別人照舊吃飯、照常打開窗戶或照樣無聊地晃蕩

如何，大人們虔誠、熱切地期待
充滿奇蹟的誕生，總會有
孩子們不太在意，跑去
樹林邊的池塘溜冰：
老大師們從未忘懷
最悲慘的殉難自有它成全之道
總之在角落，某個邋遢的場所
群狗繼續牠們狗樣的歲月而刑拷者的馬匹
靠在樹上磨蹭其無恙的臀部

譬如布魯格的《伊卡魯斯》：畫中每樁事物如何
若無其事地迴避不幸的災難；耕犁者或許
聽到濺水聲、聽到滅頂的呼喊
但他不覺得事故重大；陽光依舊
映照白皙的腿沒入綠波盪漾的
水面；而豪華精緻的船隻必也看見
某樣驚愕事件，一個男孩摔落天空
但另有要地奔赴，遂靜靜地揚帆續航

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters; how well, they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;

How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Breughel’s Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
