Oxford Encounter

Translated by SFT

We stayed with Mirjam and Mark for 4 days/nights. Before we departed, Chuan played the harmonica to show our gratitude for their kindness.

Unexpectedly, Liam took out his harmonica and played along with me. Yannik wanted to play my harmonica, too.

After growing up, they can also travel around while playing harmonicas as they pedal.

Before we arrived at Oxford, we planned to camp in a wheat field. When I was ready to cook dinner, I was surprised to see a Korean cyclist who was also at the same site. I guess it’s the most popular spot from London to Oxford.

After we got to Oxford, Chuan started his street shows.

First we met Yuya, who is in pursuit of her doctoral degree in the Oxford University. Later, a couple Enyuan Shi and Xiujing Guo traveling from America joined our chatting. Before long, Professor Kintung Yit from Taiwan National Sun Yat-Sen University also engaged. Professor Yit came here to study. He invited us to have dinner in the hostel cafeteria.

We were lucky to visit several colleges of the Oxford University together before dinner.

This is Christ Church; it’s also in one of the scenes from one of the Harry Potter movies.

Above is Merton College.

Thanks to Yuya that we were able to get in because visitors are not allowed to enter except the Oxford University students or their family and relatives. Thus we also had a chance to enter the church.

We walked on the stone-paved road to the hostel.

Let’s have the meal.

Today happened to be Chuan’s birthday. With the music from my old harmonica, Taiwanese from 3 different countries (Taiwan, USA, and the UK) have become friends.

A big cake!  Many thanks to Professor Yit’s invitation. Of course, we also enjoyed the delicious dish tomatoes with fried eggs by Director Yu and a nice dinner prepared by Zhide.

We usually have bread for our meals (3 loaves of 750gram toast bread cost 2 pounds when they are on sale).  Now we had a pleasant surprise treat at Oxford.

We have slept in a tent at night for about 2 years.

Professor Yit and Yuya paid the expense for us to stay in the backpacker hostel.

Professor Yit remarked, “There are too many students staying in their comfort zones.  They need something to make them think. Your bike trip may stir up new ideas for them.”

”Our bike journey has given us many new perspectives. If our trip can inspire other people’s imagination, it would also be a good thing.”

My harmonica quit on me today. I would get a new one in Oxford.  We will solve the problem when we face one as usual.

There’re 114 countries that have waived the visa requirement for tourists from Taiwan.  It’s now the best time for the young people to expand their horizon internationally.

Thanks for everyone passionately helping us. It does not matter how old you are, let’s go for our dreams!
