Five Dances

Reed Luplau--2010

Q:What did you want to be when you grewup?
A:I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist, but I realised later that you hadto be quite focussed with schoolwork and that really wasn’t me.

Q:What did you become?
A:Dancer/ Choreographer.

Q:What's your background - how did you end up here?
A:I grew up in Perth, WA. My mother still owns and runs a dancestudio in Perthand I spent a lot of my time there, training and pursuing my love for dance.

Q:How would you describe your work to a complete stranger?
A:Thanks to ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, most people know what a dancer is.However, if I really had to explain what I do, I would say that I create andexpress my emotions through movement.

Q:What's the first career-related thing you usually do each day?
A:Gym, emailing, training, followed by relaxing.

Q:Can you describe an "average" working day for you?
A:Breakfast first, followed by gym, then wherever I have to be to work. Itchanges for me each day, as now I am a freelance artist; I travel around Australia, wherever my work can take me. Sometimes I teach, choreograph and dance.

Q:Who or what in the arts world most inspires you?
A:Other artists. Every performer in this crazy world of dance inspires me.There are so many new developments happening around the world that I couldnever be uninspired to move forward. Especially now with the power ofvideo-sharing sites.

Q:What's the toughest challenge you've dealt with on the job?
A:Businessmen that don’t understand what I do. They try to tell me what to doand the way things should be run: they should stick to the business side ofthings.

Q:What's the best piece of advice you were ever given for your career?
A:It’s all up to you.

Q:What are the top three skills you need in your particular role?
Imagination, creativity and the guts to demand what you need.

Q:What's the best thing about your job?
A:Being a freelance artist, I am not as tired and have more time for mypartner, myself, my family and friends. I meet new people all the time and havethe opportunity to work with some of the world’s best talent.

Q:And the worst?
A:Waiting around for the next job, but so far I haven’t been waiting that long,so it has been too bad. Yet.

Q:And if you had to sum your working life in a word or phrase, what would itbe?
A:Just dance.
