Chinese cinema has been a site of cosmopolitan visions and projections from its earliest days. Paradoxically, however, the transnational outlook of early Chinese film was shaped less through the new medium and its technology itself, than rather by mediation in the realm of more established print culture. The earliest Chinese film journals defined the very language and the conventions of thinking and writing about film, and it is here that cinema is presented to Chinese audiences as squarely rooted in a transnational economy of entertainment art.

This paper offers a close reading of Motion Picture World (Yingxi shijie – literally, the world of the shadow theater), one of the earliest Chinese film journals. Founded in 1925, Motion Picture World projects a cosmopolitan vision of film – its production, its stars, its audience, and its popular and scientific discourses. I argue that journals such as Motion Picture World played a crucial role in introducing the new medium to China, in familiarizing its readers with the world of film, and in inventing the very vocabulary deployed to comprehend and discuss film. The journal consciously juxtaposed Chinese and foreign film stars, as well as domestic and Hollywood films, suggesting a seamless integration of Chinese and foreign cinema. Featuring a bilingual cover, translation tables for film names, and a serialized English-Chinese dictionary of critical film terminology, Motion Picture World and its peers decisively shaped the discursive dimension of film in the China of the 1920s, in the process placing cinema within a distinctly cosmopolitan horizon.

傅朗(Nicolai Volland),德國海德堡大學漢學係博士畢業,曾任德國海德堡大學助理教授、臺灣清華大學兼任助理教授、臺灣中央研究院博士後研究員,現任新加坡國立大學中文係助理教授。研究興趣為現當代中國報刊與印刷文化、中國出版業、中國與海外文化交流史、翻譯研究等。出版包括 Modern Chinese Literature and Culture (MCLC) 特號 "Humor and Laughter in Modern China" (2009)
