Chinese diaspora have myriad ways of defining and redefining their relations with China.  Scattered mostly in China’s coastal provinces, qiaoxiang areas are telling sites of manifestation of the multiple and changing linkages between China and Chinese diaspora.  Focusing on Guangdong, this seminar studies the formation and transformation of qiaoxiang, a term that literally means “sojourner homeland” and often carries problematic connotations associated with political identities and social consciousness of ethnic Chinese.  It is a revisionist attempt to dispel the myth about linkages between China and Chinese diaspora, surrounding the discourses on huaqiao (Overseas Chinese) and diaspora.  It argues that not all diasporic Chinese communities share the same mentality and orientation, and hence the spatial and temporal variations in their linkages with their native and ancestral homelands.  More specifically, it suggests that, in China’s reform era, China-centric primordial sentiment and patriotism do not necessarily translate into vigorous diasporic involvement in China’s economic and social realms.  Business calculation and economic rationale, on the other hand, are gaining weight in determining the location and content of participation of Chinese diaspora.
